JESS & BEN
In the middle of Brisbane’s James Street, surrounded by palms and white stone, The Calile Hotel is one of those venues that feels like its own little world. It’s modern and minimal, but still warm and full of character. The perfect setting for Jess and Ben’s wedding. From the beginning, they knew they wanted their day to feel intentional and timeless, with a focus on good design and meaningful details. Our job was to bring that vision to life through styling and coordination, making sure every element felt cohesive, personal, and effortless.
The Calile has such a distinct aesthetic. It doesn’t need to be over-styled or over-decorated. The architecture, textures, and natural light do so much of the work. For Jess and Ben, we wanted to build on that foundation, not compete with it. The goal was to create something that felt refined and romantic, while still fitting naturally within the venue’s clean, neutral spaces.
We started with the colour palette, which became the anchor for everything. Soft neutrals, blush, and wine tones worked beautifully against The Calile’s creamy stone and warm lighting. It struck the perfect balance between modern and romantic, with enough depth to feel luxurious without being heavy. The lighter tones kept things soft and elegant, while the deeper wine added richness and contrast. It’s a combination that photographed beautifully and looked even better in person.
Lighting was a huge part of the overall design. As the day turned into night, we wanted the mood to shift slowly from airy and open to intimate and warm. Candlelight played a big role in this. We filled the reception with hundreds of candles, layered at different heights to create depth and movement. As they flickered against the white walls and glass, the space came to life. There’s something about that glow that makes people slow down, talk a little softer, and really take in the moment.
One of the most personal parts of the day was Jess’s walk down the aisle. Instead of a traditional song, she had a custom piano piece created that blended Canon in D with Welcome to the Parade. It was emotional and unexpected, and it set the tone for the whole day. Everyone felt it. Those kinds of moments are what make a wedding feel truly individual. You could see the emotion in Ben’s face as she walked toward him, and you could feel how much love was in the room.
The ceremony was simple and beautiful. The Calile’s courtyard created the perfect frame for it, surrounded by soft greenery and natural light. We kept the styling minimal so the focus stayed on the couple and the emotion of the moment. Everything was clean and balanced, with a few organic floral touches to soften the space.
For the reception, we wanted guests to feel like they were walking into a modern dinner party — elegant but relaxed. The tables were layered with soft linen, textured glassware, and warm metallic accents. The florals brought the palette to life: soft blush and cream blooms with touches of mauve and wine to add depth. Everything felt cohesive without being overly coordinated. The kind of design that looks effortless but takes a lot of thought to achieve.
We worked closely with the florist to make sure the arrangements felt organic and natural. Nothing too structured, nothing too perfect. The shapes were loose, the colours tonal, and the overall effect was soft and inviting. The flowers were styled in clusters down the tables, leaving space for conversation and connection. It’s something we always prioritise — the design should enhance the experience, not dominate it.
One of the details that really stood out was the live illustrator, Eugenie Zhan. She spent the evening capturing guests and moments as they unfolded, creating hand-drawn portraits throughout the night. It was such a fun, interactive element and gave guests something special to take home. It also added this creative energy to the space that fit perfectly with Jess and Ben’s style.
The coordination side of the day was all about keeping things calm and seamless. The Calile has a beautiful flow between spaces — the courtyard, the dining room, the terrace — and we worked carefully to make sure guests moved between each part of the day smoothly. Good coordination is invisible when it’s done right. Guests don’t see the timing adjustments, the cueing, or the problem-solving happening behind the scenes. They just experience the day exactly as it was meant to be.
Jess and Ben were amazing to work with. They had a clear vision but were also completely open to ideas. That trust allowed us to create something that felt truly custom to them. Every design decision came back to who they are as a couple — modern, thoughtful, and quietly confident. They didn’t want anything over the top, and I think that’s what made the final result so strong. Every detail had purpose.
As the night went on, the atmosphere shifted into pure celebration. The room glowed from the candlelight, guests filled the terrace, and the energy was perfect — relaxed but full of joy. There’s something about The Calile at night that’s really special. The architecture feels even more intimate, and the soft hum of the city just beyond the walls makes it feel like you’re somewhere both private and alive. It’s the kind of venue that holds memories well.
When we create styling concepts for weddings like this, it’s never about trends or copying what’s popular online. It’s about capturing the feeling a couple wants their guests to have. For Jess and Ben, that feeling was connection. They wanted their wedding to feel beautiful, yes, but also warm, welcoming, and personal. Every design choice was made with that in mind. From the flow of the event to the placement of the candles, everything worked together to create one seamless experience.
That’s what modern wedding styling is really about — creating a space that feels intentional, not staged. It’s the small details, the textures, the lighting, and the pacing of the day that make the difference. When all those elements come together, the result feels effortless. That’s always the goal.
There were so many moments throughout the day that stood out. Watching Jess and Ben see the reception setup for the first time was one of them. They walked in, completely in awe, and just took it all in quietly for a second before turning to each other and smiling. That’s the moment I always look forward to — the reaction when they see their vision brought to life.
Working at The Calile is always a dream for a Brisbane wedding stylist. It gives you such a clean, architectural base to work with, and the light throughout the day is perfect for both photography and atmosphere. You don’t have to fight the space; you just have to understand it. When you design with The Calile in mind — using texture, tone, and light to complement rather than compete — it results in something timeless.
Looking back on Jess and Ben’s wedding, it’s the feeling that stays with me most. It was calm, emotional, and full of love. Every moment flowed effortlessly into the next. It’s the kind of day that reminds me why I love doing this — the planning, the design, the long hours behind the scenes. Seeing it all come together so beautifully, and knowing we helped create those memories, is incredibly rewarding.
Jess and Ben’s wedding was a true reflection of them — modern, romantic, and completely personal. Every choice they made, from the music to the styling, felt intentional and full of meaning. It was such an honour to be a part of it and to watch it all unfold at one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues.
For couples dreaming of a celebration that feels refined yet relaxed, The Calile Hotel is the perfect canvas. It’s a space that allows for creativity while maintaining a sense of calm and luxury. And when every detail comes together — the styling, the atmosphere, the coordination — it becomes so much more than a wedding. It becomes a moment in time that truly reflects who you are.
